Mineral deposits differ from other primary resources in that their location and relative abundance is fixed by geological events of the past. They are also non-renewable and new deposits are continually required to satisfy the needs of the community. These features influence the methods and principles employed in planning of land use for future generations. The study area, lying adjacent to the present and probable future population concentration in the State, will be required to provide large quantities of construction materials. Consumption in the Adelaide area in 1970 was, approximately 7 million tons and the growth in demand over the last 25 years has been almost exponential. Deposits of sand, clay and coarse aggregate are thus the most important mineral resources in the study area. Large reserves of quartzite and brown shale occur throughout the region but the geological formations containing useful deposits of sand, plastic clay and white shale are restricted in area. Limestone is produced in large quantities at Angaston and Rapid Bay for major Australian industries. Other industrial minerals, including refractory clay and talc are worked to supply local markets. Provision must be made for land containing reserves of these minerals to be available for future extension of mining operations when required.
