In a letter from Amdel to the South Australian Government Department of Mines, in March 1971, it was proposed that a project be undertaken to develop a pilot-scale electrowinning plant (to be used mainly at Amdel but transportable if required) for recovering copper from leach liquors. Approval, to provide facilities for carrying out tests on the electrowinning of copper from solutions, and to study the effects of the different variables on the performance of the equipment, was given by the Department of Mines in April 1971. However, at a meeting between Messrs J.R. Adam and R. Love, Department of Mines and Messrs P. Dixon, J. Gooden, L. Goldney, J Lackey and B. Warburton of Amdel at Thebarton on 6 October;1971, the possibilities for the local treatment of South Australian copper ore were laid out as shown in report.
