In a letter dated 8th June, 1972, Kinnaird Hilll de Rohan and Young Pty Ltd asked the Department of Mines to determine soil characteristics at the South Road level crossing, Croydon, to aid the design of foundations for a proposed bridge. Two exploratory cable-tool holes were proposed, with depths of the holes to be about 18 m. Two previous cable-tool holes (CH.1 and CH.2 see Fig,1 ) we're, drilled on the site to depths of 21.3 and 18.4 m. The results of this drilling are described by Morris (1971). Hole CH3 was drilled from the 26th to 29th of June, 1972, to a depth of 18.15m. Hole CH4 was drilled from the 4th to 6th July, 1972, to a depth of 18.3m. Sealed tube samples were taken, throughout both holes at intervals of 1.5m. Standard penetration tests were carried out every 1.5m in both holes. Open tube samples were taken throughout the remainder of the holes. The sealed tube samples were sent for testing to the Highways Department Laboratories.
