As.part of a survey-of possible pollution of groundwater In the vicinity of the city of Mount Gambier, water samples from 242 bores and 14 springs, and sinkholes were taken in later 1972, Examination of analytical results shows that nitrate is the only indicator of pollution which is useful for studies on a regional basis; other indicators merely reflect localised contamination. Nitrate concentrations in the upper part of the Gambler Limestone vary from zero to 490mg/l, and a zone of consistently higher nitrates exists near the city of Mount Gambier as a result of underground effluent disposal.
