Geological investigations for a 53 m high dam on the Little Para River 22 km north of Adelaide have shown that the site is formed by Proterozoic quartzites, slates and shaley dolomites. The metasediments dip uniformly 25° east and at the dam site a quartzite bed forms a dipslope right abutment with the left abutment a scarp of shaly dolomite and slate. Due to extensive weathering the foundations are considered only strong enough for a rockfill type dam. Investigations for the location and design of a side channel spillway and a quarry are in progress.
