The outlet duct alignment will traverse geological units 11, 12 and 13 along the left side embankment of the Little Para River. A geological plan and sections have been prepared and excavation and stability conditions examined. • The following conclusions have been made:-- • The sound bedrock will provide a stable surface for the outlet foundations. • Excavation of slopewash and alluvium is necessary along the whole of the outlet duct alignment. • Excavation of bedrock will be in very strong to moderately strong strata. Some rock fill with concrete will also be required as rock will not occur at foundation level in all cases. • Rock will require blasting for excavation and a vertical batter with some rock bolting is suggested. • Excavation of the quartzite cliff face will be facilitated by using existing open Joints. • Rock bolting of unstable blocks on the quartzite cliff face prior to foundation excavation is recommended. • Special treatment across the shear zone is not thought to be necessary.
