A proposed subdivision at Murray Bridge has been examined with reference to the suitability of the site for residential development. The site is covered by up to 0.30 metres of silt soil overlying calcrete capped limestone and calcareous sandstone bedrock. Natural slopes are stable and suitable for residential dwellings. Due to local instability adjacent to the existing quarry, lots 163 to 168 inclusive should be excluded from the proposed subdivision. A safety fence should be erected between the quarry and the site. A reticulated sewerage system is required and excavation of service trenches may require blasting. Provision should be made for improving drainage along two areas of natural drainage. Foundation conditions are good and the site is considered suitable for residential development except in the area adjacent to the quarry. Local supplies of coarse aggregate are currently obtained from a quarry located within the Monarto designated site. Limestones in the river cliff are an alternative source of aggregate materials and reopening of the quarry adjacent to the proposed subdivision may be necessary in the future. Housing subdivision should not be permitted in this area until the significance of the site as a source of aggregate has been determined.
