The Warrow Quartzite of Lower Proterozoic age is quarried periodically for railway ballast, 16 kilometres east – northeast of Tooligie Siding, Eyre Peninsula. The quartzite has been investigated by mapping and laboratory testing of samples. Los Angeles Abrasion and Sodium Sulphate Soundness losses on drill core samples range from 27 to 42 per cent and from 1.9 to 10.5 per cent respectively. Weathering Breakdown values vary from 1 to 3 per cent. The material performs satisfactorily in service but the proportion of elongate fragments is higher than desired. Production of about 254 000 tonnes of aggregate for railway ballast is recorded to date from the quarry. Large volumes of quartzite are still available.
