Seismic experiments were carried out in early 1974 over gravity and magnetic anomalies in the northern Eucla Basin in South Australia to determine whether results could be obtained using a directed line source in an area where dense, cavernous limestone lies close to the surface. The survey line was laid out over gravity and magnetic anomalies which can be interpreted as delineating sedimentary troughs within the basin. Shooting on shallow, high velocity Nullarbor Limestone gives rise to unwanted wave trains of the same general frequency as the seismic signals, and separation of 'noise' and interpretable seismic events is extremely difficult. Poor quality reflection and refraction data were recorded in several localities. These events are interpreted as arising from 1. a Cretaceous - (?) Cambrian interface, 2. from within (?) Cambrian sediments, and 3. from Archaean basement. Densities of cores from stratigraphic wells within the region were measured and converted to equivalent velocities. The velocities calculated for Cretaceous and (?) Cambrian sediments agree closely with the seismic velocity measurements and support the above interpretation. The experiments show that refraction and reflection Seismic data can be obtained in the northern Eucla Basin, but good quality information will be expensive to obtain.
