The main separation pipe alignment will traverse Units 11, 10 and 9 along the left hand side of the Little Para River. The alignment will also traverse a small tributary. The quarry will form the site for the water treatment works, 320m downstream from the toe of the rock fill dam and will be excavated in dolomite and quartzite (Units 9 and 11). Two small valleys 150-250m downstream of the quarry and on the left hand side of the Little Para River have been chosen as waste disposal areas. Geological plans and sections have been prepared and excavation and stability conditions examined. The following conclusions have been made: • The sound bedrock will provide stable foundations for the main separation pipe. • Adequate protection from rock falls for the main separation pipe is necessary particularly upstream from the left hand tributary. • Any cuts required in quartzite Unit 10 will require blasting. • Prior to construction it is recommended that loose boulders from both quartzite Units 10 and 12 are removed. • Rock bolting of some blocks of quartzite Unit 12 may be necessary prior to commencement of quarry blasting. • Quarry slopes batters between 70-75° should prove adequate with berms up to 5m wide, at 15m vertical intervals.
