A preliminary regional tectonic model and a broad stratigraphic scheme for the basement and cover rocks on the newly defined Gawler Craton are briefly summarised and are depicted on accompanying maps within the text, being conclusions drawn by SADM from the latest available geological, geophysical and geochronological data. The distribution and the likely mineralisation potential of Lower Proterozoic iron formations found in the Hutchison Group are described at some length, while the metallogenic significance of the younger Precambrian basement rocks is also mentioned.
