Drilling of one cable tool hole has revealed a uniform horizontal succession of unconsolidated sediments which correlate well with previous drilling on the adjacent Chest Clinic site. The strata consist of: Topsoil (0-2m) - 1.5 to 2m of moderately compact low plasticity, calcareous silt (ML). Alluvium (2-6.5m) - 1.5 to 4.5m of medium to dense variable clayey sand (SC-SM) with gravel. Hindmarsh Clay (6.5-13m) - 7 to 11.5m of very stiff, uniform mottled clay, high plasticity (CH). Carisbrooke Sand (13+m) - over 3m of medium dense, saturated sand with rare gravel. The most suitable foundation bed for a two storey structure with basement would appear to be the dense, dry alluvial sand and a footing depth of about 3 to 4m is recommended. Due to the variability of this deposit additional rapid drilling is recommended to check its thickness and occurrence over the entire foundation area. Beneath the alluvial sand the Hindmarsh clay could form a suitable horizon for piled foundations or a deep raft structure and soil testing of the sealed samples is recommended if this type of foundation is contemplated. Groundwater was first struck at 7.5m in the Hindmarsh Clay indicating that seepage should not be a problem during normal basement excavation.
