A programme of reconnaissance drilling has been completed in the North Adelaide and Torrens Valley areas to assist in the selection of a route for the proposed Adelaide Metropolitan Subway. The drilling was carried out to augment knowledge of the distribution of geological units and the engineering properties of these units already gained from previous drilling in the area. The programme was carried out at the request of the Director General of Transport. Mine sites were drilled in the programme CH1, 2 and 4 were drilled using a cable tool rig only. CH3, 5, 6 and 7 were started with cable tool drilling and completed with diamond drilling. GH1 and GH2 were holes commenced with the E. & W.S. Gemco rig and continued with diamond drilling. The GH2 site (Wellington Square) was later completely redrilled with a cable tool rig (CH8). In the cable tool holes the standard technique of continuous open tube sampling with a sealed tube and standard penetration test every 1.5 metres was generally, but not always adopted. Constant head permeability tests were performed in CH1, CH2 and CH4. Only the test in CH4 was successful.
