A short programme of seismic exploration was undertaken by SADM during June 1974 in the eastern Eucla Basin. Aims were to investigate the nature of a narrow magnetic trough with a maximum interpreted depth to basement of about 2300 m, and to seek evidence for or against a connection between Permian sediments of the Arckaringa Basin and the Denman Trough. The seismic data obtained were of extremely poor quality and difficult to interpret. Some evidence was revealed which indicates that the magnetic trough contains about 700 m thickness of Lower Palaeozoic, Mesozoic and Tertiary sediments. A refractor with a velocity of 3.14 km/s is interpreted as an event arising from either Permian or Tertiary rocks. The presence of Permian sediments is supported by known velocities of Permian material, which are around 3 km/s in the Arckaringa Basin to the north-east and in the Denman Trough to the south-west. However, previous drilling east and south of the survey area intersected Middle Eocene Pidinga Formation strata at depths and with thicknesses which can be extrapolated to fit the seismic observations. A limited amount of further seismic work followed by shallow drilling is recommended to resolve the problems of interpretation.
