Background At the request of Mr. R. Adam, South Australian Department of Mines, Amdel undertook an investigation of possible uses for Coffin Bay limesand. This was done as the result of greatly reduced consumption of limesand by the current operator, Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, and the need to develop alternative outlets. Objectives To identify potential alternative uses for Coffin Bay limesand. Summary of Work Done The following work has been carried out: (1) Data reported in previous investigations relating to the characteristics of Coffin Bay limesand have been collected and summarised. (2) A brief review has been made of the uses of limestone and lime in general (3) Consideration has been given to several possible uses for limesand in chemical processing industries in South Australia. Conclusions (1) Alternative uses for Coffin Bay limesand are severely restricted due to its low inherent value, the relatively high cost of transport to present consumers, and the great abundance of high-grade limestone deposits throughout Australia in close proximity to points of use. (2) Closer examination of the production of magnesia from sea-water, which would represent a large-scale use of Coffin Bay limesand, may be justified. (3) The minimum economic size for a plant to produce lime from Coffin Bay limesand is estimated to be 65 000 tonnes of hydrated lime per annum.
