Discharge from visited springs in the Dalhousie area was estimated at .86 cumecs. There may be as much as .02 cumecs additional seepage through many smaller seeps in the area which were not visited. The spring waters were alkaline, with a pH varying from 7 to 8. The spring temperature (at the source) varied from 29-44°C – the hotter springs being in the north. Salinities range from about 650-2000mg/1, the lower salinity waters being found in the north. The chemical constituents of the spring waters were dominated by sodium and chloride ions with smaller but approximately equal proportions of carbonate and sulphate. Nitrate, fluoride, phosphate, boron and silica were minor. It is estimated that 80-90% of the total water lost from Great Artesian Basin aquifers via mound springs in South Australia is discharged in the Dalhousie Region.
