Quarrying of flaggy carbonate-bearing siltstone near Parachilna Gorge in the Flinders Ranges has been proposed to provide both slate for reroofing historically significant buildings and flagstone for billiard tables. Objections were received to the granting of an Extractive Mineral Lease over the Parachilna Deposit, Mineral Claim 340, which lies within a Class A Environmental Area as defined in the Flinders Ranges Planning Area Development Plan. The “slate” belongs to the Tapley Hill Formation of Sturtian age, which is a widespread lithological unit in the Mt. Lofty and Flinders Ranges. Similar deposits in Class B Environmental Areas occur near Blinman at Glass Gorge and Blinman Creek. The carbonate-bearing siltstone does not display the properties of a slate or a slate substitute and removal and disposal of large quantities of waste will be necessary to obtain slabs of sufficient dimensions for billiard table tops.
