Eight cable-tool holes have been completed as part of a program of drilling on the site of the proposed jetty for the Redcliffs Petrochemical Plant. Drilling has revealed a variable succession of unconsolidated sediments. The Marine sands are loose, liable to scour and unsuitable as a foundation horizon. In the underlying Hindmarsh Clay the upper gypsiferous sand should form a suitable level for end bearing piles as its density approaches that of weak rock in some areas. Due to the presence of gypsiferous material within the sediments, a sulphate resistant cement will be necessary if concrete piles are to be used.
