During the last eight years the Early Permian strata overlying the Crown Point Formation in the Pedirka Basin have been informally referred to as the Purni Formation. The name was first used by Jacque (1966) in the unpublished well completion report for F.P.C. (A) Mokari No. 1. It has since been used in both published (Whitten, 1972; Williams, 1973) and unpublished works. The purpose of this paper is to formalise the name. Jacque (1966) divided the formation into three members (Upper, Middle and Lower) on lithological grounds. The three members were not identified in F.P.C. (A). Purni No. 1 by Magneir, (1964) but the author has used the sonic and gamma ray logs to correlate from Mokari No. 1 to Purni No. 1 (Youngs, 1975).
