Further drilling and aquifer testing between the proposed Noora evaporation basin and the River Murray yielded an average value of about 100 m3/day/m for transmissivity of the Loxton Sand aquifer. It is therefore expected that initial effects of such a basin on saline groundwater inflow to the River Murray will not be observed until about 30 years after its construction. Full effect of the basin will not be observed until at least 100 years. Results from two different electrical analogue experiments using the above transmissivity indicate that the magnitude of the expected salt load increase is of the order of 20-30 tonnes/day or 5-7% of the existing salt load entering the river between Lock 5 and Loxton. This figure should be a maximum expected increase as it is assumed the Noora Basin would be operated at the 22m level. Actual water level however will vary between 17-22m. It is suggested that the groundwater mounds building up beneath the Simarloo and Pike River irrigation areas will have a greater effect on salt inflow to the River than the Noora Basin. Annual measurement of flows and salinity in the Pike-Mundic Creek system are recommended to monitor this anticipated problem.
