Immediately beneath the Elizabeth West waste disposal area, between depths of 6m and at least 128m, is a series of Pleistocene and Tertiary confined aquifers. A site visit and examination of departmental records has indicated that: • The area is one of only moderate rainfall, and vertical infiltration to the water table is minimal. Limited recharge may take place in winter from adjacent drainage channels, but discharge of leachate into the same is unlikely. • There is a sufficient thickness of soil between the base of the pit and the highest water table to substantially cleanse leachate prior to its entering the groundwater. • Nearby existing bores are usable only for stock and salt resistant crops, and there is little possibility of their being used for domestic supplies. • Leakage from the upper to the lower aquifers will occur, but the small quantity and degree of dispersion of leachage will keep contamination within tolerable limits. • It is concluded that the disposal area does not pose a threat to groundwater quality, and htat discharge of contaminated groundwater to surface supplies will not occur.
