Three cable tool holes have been drilled to investigate the foundation conditions for a proposed new bridge over the railway line, on Burbridge Road, Hilton. Drilling disclosed a near horizontal sequence of Quaternary and Tertiary sediments which are covered by 1.5 metres of fill material. The geological succession may be summarised as follows: From 0.0-1.5m: FILL; Predominantly medium-dense sands and gravels 1.5-3.0m: BAKARA SOIL; Red-brown hard calcareous clay 3.0-9.5m: ALLUVIUM; Dark brown very stiff clays, moderately compact silts, and yellow-brown medium dense sands 9.5-15.0m: HINDMARSH CLAY; predominantly grey-green stiff to hard mottled clay with moderately compact silts and a medium dense sand lens. 15.0-17.0m: CARISBROOKE SAND; Red-brown dense clayey sand (CH2 only) 15.0-21.0m: HALLETT COVE SANDSTONE; Yellow-brown medium-strong calcareous sandstone with thin clayey sand interbeds 21.0-24.0m: PORT WILLUNGA BEDS; Yellow-brown medium-strong calcareous sandstone with thin clayey sand bands. Groundwater was struck at verious depths in each of the holes but the piezometric surface is about 9.5m below ground surface. A sulphate resistant concrete should be used below the water table as gypsum is a common evaporite found in the Hindmarsh clay. The bridge foundations will probably utilise driven piles which will meet moderate to high resistence from about 12-15m in the Hindmarsh Clay. They should meet refusal below this depth in the Hallett Cove Sandstone which will form a suitable end-bearing horizon for the bridge.
