A hydrological survey to update information for the MURLOOCOPPIE 1:250 000 geological sheet was carried out in October and November 1975. Approximately 80 water wells were located and photographed. Nearly all wells are used for stock water. Salinity varies from 100-29000 mg/l with values commonly being from 1-5000 mg/l. Standing water levels (S.W.L) vary from 0.6m to over 100m. There are three aquifer systems. The uppermost being the Quaternary alluvials which are associated with drainage lines in the northeast of the sheet. The Bulldog Shale in the north Central area is a shallow (10-30m) unconfined aquifer, limited in supply and producing groundwater of good quality (100-1000 mg/l). The third aquifer system is the Cadnaowie Formation/Algebuckina Sandstone which is confined to the northeast. Salinity and water levels are quite variable ranging from 1300-17000 mg/l and 0.6-125m respectively. There are no flowing wells on the Murloocoppie sheet. Recharge to the Bulldog Shale is local whilst recharge to the Cadna-owie/Algebuckina Sandstone probably takes place to the west and east of the Murloocoppie Sheet where the formations outcrop. All streams of the area are local in origin and are ephemeral. The area has an arid climate with most rainfall caused by thunderstorm activity from October to March.
