During a ground-water field survey of the Hundred of Kapunda, as part of a groundwater investigation in the mid-north of the State, 110 bores and wells were located. Groundwater salinity lies between 145-8 800mg/1 with yields between 0.1 and 38l/sec. The groundwater is used mainly for stock. The only large surface storage (Taylors Gap Reservoir) was closed in 1917 because the water became undrinkable. Dams are numerous due to the topography of the area, and surface run off is generally abundant with the larger dams holding water through the dry summer months. There have been few extreme changes in the hydrogeology of the area based on comparisons with data collected in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Two isolated cases: one bore on the western boundary going sandy after an earth tremor five years ago; and the other along the northern Light River flats where shallow wells have dried up, apparently due to Lucerne farming.
