No satisfactory process for direct chemical treatment of the bulk Port Pirie tailings. Effectiveness of high intensity magnetic separation for concentrating monazite and xenotime from deslimed tailing should be assessed. Slimes fraction is suitable for simple roast leach process. Of estimated 272 tonnes of yttrium oxide, 53 tonnes are readily soluble.
