Drilling of 25 cable tool holes to depth up to 20.1m in the designated area for Monarto New Town illustrates the nature, distribution and thickness of Quaternay and Tertiary sediments. The main tertiary units are the marine fossiliferous limestone of the Mannum Limestone, and the fluvial Parilla Sand. Important Quaternary units are the Blanchetown Clay, calcrete horizons, and Molineaux Sand. Variably weathered basement rocks of Kanmantoo Group schists and Monarto Granite (granodiorite) were encountered at depths as shallow as 1.3m.
