37 000 tonnes of gold-copper ore have been produced from the Kitticoola Mine in five phases of mining during its 150 year history. 30 000 tonnes were mined as gold ore, yielding 162 560 grams of gold at an average grade of 5.4 grams/tonne. 7 000 tonnes of copper ore were extracted at an estimated average grade of 2.25% copper. The mine comprises nine lodes averaging 1.5 metres in width, with a recorded maximum of 15 metres. They are lenticular and from 30 - 1 000 metres in length. The largest orebody has been worked to a depth of 128 metres. The gold-copper lodes occur as shear or fault infillings within the Cambro-Ordovician Palmer granite, brecciated by the adjacent Palmer Fault. Primary mineralisatlon is hydrothermal and consists mainly of ankerite, specularite, quartz, chalcopyrite, pyrite and gold. In the oxidised zone, the suiphides have been altered to malachite and iron oxides. Kanmantoo Group metasediments of Cambro-Ordovician age, possible source rocks for the Kitticoola mineralisation, occur as country rocks to the granite. Bedrock geochemical surveys and diamond drilling are recommended.
