Surface lineaments on Landsat imagery within and around the margins of the Cooper Basin show variable density and variable length, but two preferred directions. These are 55 degrees and 305 degrees and correspond to dominant structural directions in Australia. Some lineaments are aligned with geological boundaries, geophysical and structural trends; others show little relation to these factors. The wrench fault tectonic theory does not conclusively explain the known structural elements of the Cooper Basin, although the observed conjugate set of lineaments is consistent with the theory.
