A monitoring programme has been established, in a paddock immediately north of the factory, to ascertain the effect of sprinkler disposal of partly treated factory effluent on soil, herbage and groundwater.composition. The aim of the investigation is to determine management techniques for the safe disposal of whey. Representative sites have been selected for regular soil and herbage sampling and sampling of groundwater will be achieved through a network of 47 observation wells. These samples will be mainly analyzed for nitrogen, chloride and total salt content. Results of groundwater sampling so far have shown background nitrate values of up to 42 mg/1 before any effluent has been applied to the area. It is recommended that sampling continue at regular intervals for a minimum period of two years to determine long term effects of this method of effluent disposal.
