Recent drilling information, aquifer testing, a review of data on existing town water supply wells and a survey of wells intersecting the confined Kongorong Sand aquifer in the vicinity of Kingston have been used to assess the state of Kingston's water supply, derived from a well field east of the town. In the near future (2-3 years time) it is anticipated that new production wells will be required. These should be drilled at the eastern end of the well field where aquifer thicknesses and hydraulic conductivities are larger. Chemical data indicate salinity of the confined groundwater should be about 800-850 mg/1, lower than that found in the central and western portions of the well field. Iron content would appear to be similar but bicarbonate is xpected to be 20-40% higher (200-240 mg/1). Suitable drilling sites are halfway between existing wells Nos. 6 and 9 where drawdown interference from these production wells, should not exceed 12 m and some 500 m further east of No. 9 well where drawdown interference should not exceed 6 m. Specifications should be similar to those for well Nos. 9 and 9A. In order to assess long term pumping effects on water levels around the well field it is recommended that, well Nos. 5, 7 and 9A be monitored on a fortnightly basis. Readings should be taken at-least 24 'hours - after the nearest pumping well has been switched off. A continuous.water level recorder should be installed in well No. 1 pumphouse. Long term groundwater quarterly shows only minor fluctuations in total salt, this being attributed to aquifer inhomogeneities. Sea water intrusion and downward leakage of unconfined saline groundwater do not appear to present any problems under existing and anticipated future conditions in the well field.
