For a project to determine the base metal potential of known copper-mineralised igneous rocks which outcrop in an area located approximately 59 km south-west of Olary, the South Australian Government has completed detailed mapping, geochemical sampling, induced polarization and magnetic surveying, and test drilling programmes at the Anabama Hill and Cronje Dam prospects. Anabama Hill is an erosional remnant of a greisen-granite complex, which forms part of the Anabama Granite batholith that was emplaced during the Ordovician. At Anabama Hill mineralised hydrothermal fluids have produced zones of alteration, of which a pyritic greisen zone is the best-developed, defining a semi-circular, dome-shaped shell some 900 m in diameter. Coincident geochemical, magnetic and IP anomalies are associated with the greisen zone. The rock types, style of hydrothermal alteration and sulphide assemblage have some porphyry copper affinities. Three inclined diamond drillholes totalling 643.59 m of penetration were sited by SADM on selected IP anomalies at the Anabama Hill prospect to test for possible economic copper and molybdenum mineralisation. The best mineralised intersections were 5 m of 0.1% Cu in the upper part of DDH4, and 5.5 m of 0.1% Mo in the middle part of DDH6. All three drillholes contain up to 5% pyrite, which is mostly associated with zones of hydrothermal alteration. Five vertical rotary percussion drillholes totalling 395 m put down at Cronje Dam prospect tested coincident IP and soil anomalies for possible economic copper mineralisation. The best mineralised intersection was 14 m of 0.12% Cu in the upper part of hole RP2. Minor copper concentrations occur within muscovite-quartz schists at or near their contact with silicified rhyolite layers.
