Palynological analysis was undertaken on two coal samples and a shale sample from within and just above the Lower Series Coal Seams of the Telford Basin, Leigh Creek.- The lowermost coal was dominated by monolete spores and the upper coal by bisaccate pollen. The shale sample also contained a restricted assemblage but allowed correlation with the upper Series Coal Seams and the Northern Basin Coal Measures. The age of the samples is Carnian (Late Triassic), based on the presence of the nominate species of the Craterisporites rotundus Zone (de Jersey 1975) from the Ipswich Coal Measures.
