Late in 1976, the Mintaro Slate and Flagstone Company approached the South Australian Department of Mines seeking assistance to enable it to improve the efficiency of its operation and so enable it to operate more profitably in the face of competition from lower cost imported slate. A programme of investigation was approved which included: (1) A study by the SADM to prepare a suitable base plan of the mine area from aerial photographs, a geological map of the area, and to carry out a sampling programme of the area. (2) A study of the Company's market and marketing programme to be undertaken by the Trade and Development Div. of the Premier's Department. (3) A study of the Company's quarrying, slate preparation and processing plant to be undertaken by Amdel Ltd. The objectives for the Amdel project were to: - provide a detailed description of the current operations, including quarrying, materials handling and processing operations for each of the Company's products; - assess labour and slate utilization; and - highlight areas of operation requiring improvement.
