A survey of refuse and potential pollution sites was carried out in November-December 1976 in the South East and Mallee areas of South Australia. The area of study comprises the following Counties: Buccleuch, Buckingham, Cardwell, Chandos, Grey, MacDonnell and Robe. The greatest pollution potential threat to groundwater is in the Lower South East (approximately County Grey) where the population density is high and the hydrogeological parameters make the confined aquifers susceptible to contamination. This region is fully dependent on groundwater whereas the Upper South East and the Mallee areas are supplied, in part, by reticulated Murray River water.
