Near Carpa, on eastern Eyre Peninsula, a quartz graphite schist within metasediments of the Cleve Metamorphics of Lower Proterozoic age, is a potential source of graphite dust. Preliminary evaluation in 1974 was followed by auger drilling by the client, geological mapping, an Induced Polarization geophysical survey and, in 1976, six inclined diamond core holes. Although graphite grade is satisfactory, with an average graphite content of 15%, the fine flake size makes beneficiation difficult. Crushing to minus 0.1 mm is required to obtain the necessary liberation to meet specifications for lower grade graphite dust. Costeaning followed by a rotary drilling programme is necessary to confirm structure and establish reserves.
