The total quantity of water flowing or pumped, from wells in the Great Artesian Basin in South Australia is estimated to be 77 x 10 6 kl/year. Much: of this flow is uncontrolled and; occurs from uncased wells or from wells in which the headworks have corroded and collapsed. Flows from natural mound springs is estimated to be an additional 50 x 10 6, kl/year. This water is not utilized and is at present flowing to waste with a consequent lowering of pressures in the Basin aquifers. A programme of rehabilitation of the uncontrolled wells over the next few years is proposed. The effects, should the weil flows "be cut off, on the ecological systems that have formed in the ponded water at the well heads is being investigated.
