The Barunga Sandstone, of Marinoan age, has previously been worked for railway ballast and road metal at the Redhill Quarry. Mapping and drilling have indicated 342,000 cubic metres of good quality ballast, available from the Lower Massive Quartzite unit. An additional 193,000 cubic metres of Upper Flaggy Quartzite, containing up to 10 percent clay, should produce acceptable ballast on screening to plus 3 cm. Shallow diamond drilling, northeast of the quarry, is recommended. Fifteen occupied houses are within 400 m of the quarry.
