A minimum metamorphic age of greater than 2400 Ma is inferred for two banded iron formations outcropping within the TARCOOLA 1:250 000 mapsheet area. The age obtained is considerably greater than that of the mid-Proterozoic Middleback Group, with which both iron formations have previously been correlated. At least two periods of iron formation deposition, therefore, have occurred in the Gawler Craton during the Precambrian.
