South Australia has been a traditional source of non metallic minerals. Those minerals currently being mined that offer scope for expansion is – Barite – In pigments, drilling muds, the manufacture of barium chemicals and for medical purposes Feldspar - large scale mining of potash and soda feldspar pegmatites and granitic rocks is being considered for ceramics and glass manufacture Talc - lower grade talc-albite rock from the Adelaide Hills has potential in fast firing ceramics Gypsum - light weight, fire proof wall panels have renewed interest in marginal grade deposits Fine Tailings - from the sand washing plants in Adelaide are a far more useful material than previously believed Mineral deposits that are known but are yet to be developed include andradite garnet, magnesite, micaceous hematite, montmorillonite, palygorskite, silica sand, trona and wollastonite. Minerals that are being sought at present are fluorite, fire clay, graphite, kaolin, muscovite and sillimanite. Other minerals for which exploration in South Australia is considered worth while are borates, phosphate, montan wax and zeolites.
