Two exploration wells have been drilled through the Cainozoic sequence to Precambrian bedrock to provide stratigraphic and hydrogeological data. At the South Parklands site two aquifers were tested. The upper one yielded a large supply of marginally saline water but could not be developed due to fine sand which penetrated the well screen. A thin lower aquifer gave a small supply of better quality water. At West End Brewery only small supplies of saline water were encountered at two levels. These results confirm earlier experience in the city area where large yields of groundwater acceptable for oval irrigation are only obtained from a few isolated localities. Hydrogeological conditions are complex due to the number of thin aquifers and a major break in sedimentation caused by the mid-Tertiary erosion period.
