Borehole drilled in 1952 to 247.8 metres in centre of the Telford Coal Basin intersected gently infolded sediments of Rhaetian (latest Triassic) to Bajocian (Middle Jurassic) which overlie the coal measures of Carnian (Late Triassic) age. Surficial sediments are Pleistocene Telford Gravel and Avondale Clay below which are carbonaceous mudstones and siltstones. This is the first record of Middle Jurassic strata at Leigh Creek.
