Regional 1:250 000 mapping and associated studies in the Tallaringa-Coober Pedy-Stuart Range area have established the presence of palaeodrainage features which were active during Eocene to Pleistocene times. Preliminary details of two of these, the Tallaringa Palaeodrainage System and the Mirackina Palaeochannel are given in Barnes and Pitt (1976 a,b); later work is reported in Pitt et al., (1978) and further data on palaeodrainage distribution in western South Australia is being compiled at present. The Tallaringa Palaeodrainage System consists of two primary trunk channels, the Tallaringa and Garford Palaeochannels. Depositional and erosional events within the system are recorded by a number of Tertiary sedimentary units and the disconformities separating them. The oldest of these units is a sequence of upper Eocene lignitic sands and clays, equated to the Pidinga Formation (Lindsay and Harris, 1975). It is unconformably overlain, within the palaeochannels, by a distinctive clay-carbonate sequence, named the Garford Formation, the subject to this note. The Garford Formation is unconformably overlain by chalcedonic limestones, equated to the (?) Plio-Pleistocene Mangatitja and Mt. Willoughby Limestones (Major, 1973; Nichol, 1971), which are then overlain by late Tertiary to Quarternary calcreted sands, named the Wintrena Beds (definition in progress).
