A sequence of well-recrystallised quartzites, with interbedded schists and sandstones has been mapped on Cutana and Aroona Stations in the Olary area, during current production of the OLARY 1:250 000 sheet. The sequence, here termed the Cutana Beds, is surrounded by quartzofelspathic gneisses of the Willyama Complete but is clearly not part of these metamorphics. Previously, Campana and King (1958) and others, correlated it with Sturtian or Torrensian sequences to the west, on OLARY. However, the characteristics of the unit under discussion.do not compare well with the Torrensian or Sturtian sequences, suggesting they are not equivalent to either and that the formal recognition of the unit is warranted. The lack of data on both upper and lower boundaries and rock relationships, as a result of generally poor outcrop, is the basis for its recognition as a unit of beds rather than a formation. The Cutana Beds form a sinuous line of low, stony ridges, rising above the surrounding saltbush and bluebush plains on which.Willyama Complex gneisses outcrop poorly.
