A visit during September 1978 to two United Kingdom water authorities, Wessex and Yorkshire, proved very worthwhile. Aspects of investigational techniques, waste disposal, and groundwater abstraction effects on river flow were examined. Investigational techniques varied from our own because fractured rock aquifers are more commonly encountered, particularly in the Cretaceous Chalk formation. Acidification is widely used as a completion practice in production wells penetrating this aquifer. Significant increases in specific capacity are observed after acid treatment. Applications for solid waste disposal are processed with hydrogeological supervision. Sites are selected where infiltration is minimal or, if not, where significant aquifers do not occur. Waste dumping is immediately followed by burial by clay or another low permeability material to reduce the chance of any leachate forming. Effects of groundwater abstraction on river flow are evaluated with extended aquifer tests (3 months). Maintenance of stream flow is a necessity to keep conditions suitable for fish breeding, and for cress and vegetable farming. In some cases, where the river flow is seriously affected by groundwater offtake, make-up water must be supplied further upstream.
