A strikingly attractive red and black banded iron formation of Proterozoic age outcrops at Wilgena Hill, 14 km east of Tarcoola. The iron formation is fine-grained, finely laminated and polishes to a high finish. Reserves of banded iron formation suitable for ornamental purposes are considerable. The iron formation is microfolded and faulted and contains rare small oval impressions of unknown origin on bedding surfaces. In addition, the iron formation contains abundant relic microspherical structures which may indicate deposition as a colloid.
