The purpose of petroleum well log evaluation is quantitative determination of the possible presence of hydrocarbons. This necessitates making calculations of porosity and water saturation for many intervals within the well, using various log combinations. The large number of calculations needed for a sophisticated evaluation are most efficiently processed by computer. Two commercially-available computer programs for well log evaluation are SARABAND, for shaly-sand analysis, and CORIBAND for complex-lithologies analysis, principally of carbonates (Schlumberger, 1972, 1974). LOGEVAL is a simplified version of the SARABAND method, particularly suited for evaluation of Cooper Basin sequences. LOGEVAL is an extensive adaptation of a basic program compiled by Kurylowicz (1978).
