The Kings Bluff goldfield operated from 1887 to about 1918, with sporadic interest shown by prospectors thereafter. Gold is found primarily in vuggy quartz veins transecting the quartzite host-rock. The vugs themselves, which are relatively higher in gold values, are infilled with clay and abundant doubly-terminated quartz crystals, rarely up to 5 cm long. The in-situ vugs and, more importantly, the mullock heaps around the mines, provide ideal localities for the amateur mineral collector. Large, well formed, singly-terminated quartz crystals associated with vein calcite and siderite occur nearby at the Nillinghoo (Kirkeek's) and Teetulpa Goldfields.
