Australian Barytes Pty Ltd mines high quality barite from steeply dipping lodes in the Brachina Formation siltstone and shale at Oraparinna in the Flinders Ranges. The barite lodes within the mine comprise the Oraparinna No. 1 Lode System as first defined by Broadhurst (1946). Operations consist of shallow open cuts and underground workings on four levels. Ore reserves within the No. 1 Lode system down to the planned No. 6 Level are contained in four main lodes. The total measured and indicated ore reserve in all lodes is 78,700 tonnes, and the total potential ore reserve down to No. 6 Level is 142,700 tonnes. These figures represent industrial grade barite. Numerous other barite lodes in the vicinity of the main mine have been mined by open cut, but reserves remaining in these lodes are small.
