A review of available hydrogeological information on the Willalooka - Keith Irrigation Area has shown no significant trends within groundwater levels and groundwater quality to date. Although local farmers and graziers have reported a 1-2 m decline in standing groundwater levels over the last 30-40 years, it is felt that this is due to the effects of land clearing rather than to effects of the South East Drainage Scheme or the numerous flood irrigation schemes in operation within the area. Comparison with the Padthaway region to the south, which is hydrogeologically similar, shows a far greater intensity of irrigation there than within the area of study, and yet no significant groundwater level decline has been observed. Approximate calculations have shown recharge to exceed withdrawal by a factor of 1.6 to 1, though this is probably not true in the Mount Monster area. The area warrants further investigation, and it is recommended that groundwater quality and groundwater level monitoring networks be maintained. In addition, expansion of the irrigated area should be monitored through the permits issued for irrigation wells and also, if possible, by using LANDSAT imagery. Long term problems facing the area are likely to arise from salinity increases derived from vertical and lateral seepage of saline groundwater within the unconfined aquifer, and also from irrigation drainage. It is expected that significant trends in groundwater quality will not be evident for several years, and a review of the situation is suggested for say 1984 unless obvious changes appear before that date.
