In a sampling programme carried out over the Sturtian Merinjina Tillite and basal Tapley Hill Formation strata on parts of the COPLEY 1:250 000 mapsheet area, 684 soil samples and 71 rock samples were collected at 25 m and 12.5 m intervals along 24 traverses spaced 4-10 km apart. The samples were analysed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Co, Ni, Mn and Fe, and in the case of the rock samples, for 14 other elements as well. Few anomalies were obtained, and no persistently anomalous horizon was located within the stratigraphic interval sampled. Where anomalous Cu, Pb and Zn values do occur, they are most commonly located near the contact between the Merinjina Tillite and the Tapley Hill Formation. Structural features are probably the controlling factor for these anomalous concentrations of base metals.
